Sample packs of double-edge blades: what to know before you buy
Sample packs. Mixed packs of several brands, usually a tuck of five from each: 30 blades from 6 brands, 50 from 10. They exist to find a blade before buying a box, the most repeated advice in wet-shaving forums. The brands in the pack, and whether each tuck’s country is named, matter more than the price per blade.
Every double-edge blade fits every double-edge safety razor, so the choice is brand, grind and coating; the same blade can feel different in another razor or on another face. Buyers most often take the sharpest blade for the best one, and buy a 100-pack before trying a sampler. Since 2022 several blades sold as Gillette, Astra and Nacet have come from new factories, so a familiar name no longer says where a box was made.
Specs and terms that matter
One format
Any double-edge blade fits any razor made for double-edge blades; brands differ in steel, grind and coating, not in size. Snapped or cut in half, the same blade is the half-DE blade most shavettes take.
Sharpness and smoothness
No standard scale exists, and makers publish none. As discussed on r/wicked_edge and in shaving guides, Feather, Kai, Nacet and Gillette Platinum are usually called sharp. Astra Superior Platinum, Personna Platinum and Gillette Silver Blue count as middling, and Astra Superior Stainless, Derby Extra, Shark and Treet as mild. Smoothness is a separate axis, and every placement has its dissenters.
Coatings
Titles name a coating: “Platinum” (Astra Superior Platinum, Gillette Platinum; Feather’s Hi-Stainless is platinum-coated), “Super Stainless”, PTFE or “Teflon”, “Chrome” or “Iridium”. The blades are stainless steel; the coating word is the maker’s claim, not a grade.
Tucks and boxes
Blades come in tucks of 5 or 10; a box of 100 is usually 20 tucks × 5, and cartons of 200 or 250 exist. Feather’s yellow 10-blade tuck and silver 5-blade tuck hold the same blade.
Price per blade
In 2026 US pricing, r/wicked_edge threads put Astra at about 8 ¢ a blade and Feather or Kai at about 32 ¢, with Treet under $7 per 100. At about a blade a week, 10 ¢ against 40 ¢ is roughly $5 against $20 a year.
Country of manufacture
As of March 2022, Procter & Gamble’s St Petersburg plant made Astra, Gillette Platinum, Silver Blue, Nacet and 7 O’Clock, among others. Since then specialist shops have listed Gillette Platinum from China (from February 2024), Nacet from Egypt and Astra from China, and users report Astra from India. The “Made in” line on the box says which.
Shaves per blade
Shaving guides and forums report three to five shaves as typical, one or two for very coarse beards and 10–15 for fine hair; many users change weekly whatever the count. Makers publish no figure.
Used blades
Used blades go into a blade bank: a sealed metal can, or the used-blade slot in some dispensers such as Derby’s. Local rules decide whether a full can goes to scrap-metal recycling. The site does not list blade banks.
Before you buy
- Start with a sampler: shaving forums and guides repeat that a mixed pack of tucks finds a blade before a 100-pack commits to one.
- Match blade to razor: the community pairs a sharp blade with a mild razor and a mild blade with an aggressive one; adjustable razors widen the choice.
- Read “Made in” on the box or in the shop’s title. Since 2022 the same brand names have come from Russia, India, China, Egypt or Turkey, and users report batch differences; a tuck tests a new source before a box.
- Check the seller: Astra, Nacet, Personna Lab Blue and Feather are the blades most often reported faked or repacked, and specialist shops that state the factory are the community’s answer.
- Count blades, not tucks: “100 (20 × 5)” and “10 × 10” are both 100 blades.
- Read “Platinum”, “PTFE” and “Iridium” as coating claims, not as a sharpness grade.
Myths and mistakes
- Sharpest is not best: Feather is the community’s consensus sharpest blade and also the one most often called harsh for beginners or in an aggressive razor.
- A familiar brand that suddenly shaves differently has three usual causes, all reported since 2022: a new factory, a counterfeit or a bad batch. The box’s origin line rules the first in or out.
- A sealed tuck is not proof: in July 2026 a buyer on r/wicked_edge found Treet blades inside a sealed Nacet tuck from a well-known vendor.
- Stropping a blade on denim or drying it after use is a disputed forum habit; modern coated blades are not made to be resharpened.
- A 100-pack lasts about two years at a blade a week; the “seven years and not halfway” stories describe much rarer changes.
Questions people ask
Which double-edge blade is the sharpest?
Feather, by the consensus on r/wicked_edge and in shaving guides, with Kai close behind. No standard scale exists and makers publish none. The usual caveat is that the sharpest blade is also the one most often called harsh on sensitive skin or in an aggressive razor.
Which blade should I try first?
The consensus answer is a sampler pack rather than any one brand, because the same blade shaves differently in different razors and on different faces. Threads that do name blades most often mention Astra Superior Platinum, Personna Platinum, Gillette Silver Blue and Nacet, each with dissent.
How many shaves does a double-edge blade last?
Three to five is the typical report, one or two for very coarse beards and up to 10–15 for fine hair. Many users change weekly regardless. Makers publish no figure, so it is a personal number.
Why do my new Astra blades feel different?
Often because the factory changed. In 2022 Astra was made at P&G’s St Petersburg plant; boxes made in India and China have followed since, and users disagree on whether the new batches are worse. A fake from a third-party seller is the other common cause, so check the box’s origin line and the seller.
Are Russian-made blades still sold?
Old stock and some new production still circulate, and availability has changed repeatedly since 2022. Specialist shops name the country in the title; Amazon listings rarely do, so the box is the check.
How can I tell if double-edge blades are fake?
Users report these signs: a price well below the usual one, a third-party seller, packaging that differs from a known tuck, and blades that shave unlike the brand’s reputation. Astra, Nacet, Personna Lab Blue and Feather are the most often named.
What do I do with used razor blades?
Collect them in a blade bank, a sealed metal can or a dispenser’s used-blade slot, so nobody is cut when the bin is emptied. Whether a full can goes to scrap-metal recycling depends on the local scheme.
