Half-DE single-edge blades for shavettes: what to know before you buy

Half-DE. Double-edge blades cut in half for shavettes and some pivoting razors, sold pre-cut (Derby Professional, Shark Super Stainless halves, Dorco) in packs of 100–300. A whole double-edge blade snapped in two does the same job. A 100-pack is 100 halves.

Single-edge blades come in several formats that do not swap: GEM, injector, Artist Club (AC) and half-DE blades for shavettes. The razor’s loading system decides which one fits, not the words “single edge” in a title. Buyers most often assume any single-edge blade fits a shavette, or that a GEM-shaped scraper blade from a hardware aisle is a shaving blade.

Specs and terms that matter

GEM

A thick blade with a folded metal spine along its back, for GEM-type razors; most of those are vintage, with a few modern makers. Personna’s PTFE-coated GEM blade is now sold as AccuForge, and users report the same blade under the new name.

Injector

A narrow blade pushed straight into the razor from a metal dispenser, the Schick injector format. Current blades are made in China; some users prefer older German stock.

Artist Club (AC)

The Japanese barber format, about 1.5 × the length of a double-edge blade and thicker: Feather Pro, Pro Super, Pro Light and Pro Guard, Kai Captain and Schick Proline. Most modern single-edge razors take AC blades.

Half-DE

A double-edge blade cut in half, sold pre-cut (Derby Professional, Shark) or snapped at home. Most shavettes take these; AC and half-DE blades differ in length and thickness and do not swap.

Thickness

Single-edge blades are thicker and stiffer than double-edge ones, which changes how they sit and flex in the razor. It is one reason the formats do not cross over.

Pack sizes and prices

Packs run 10, 20, 100, 200 and 300. Forum reports in 2025 put GEM-type blades at about $50 per 100 from a US shop and $53 per 200, shipping included, from a UK one. Derby Professional half blades cost about $10 per 100.

Claimed shaves per blade

Enthusiast tallies, not tests, report 8–20 shaves for injector blades, 14–24 for AC and 10–25 for GEM. Beard and technique move the figures a long way.

Before you buy

  • Identify the format from the razor and its maker, not from the words “single edge”: GEM, injector, AC and half-DE blades are not interchangeable.
  • For a shavette, check whether it takes half-DE blades, AC blades or both; many take only one, and the lengths differ.
  • For GEM blades, confirm a shaving blade: PTFE-coated shaving blades and uncoated scraper or utility blades share the shape, and third-party titles can blur the two.
  • Count blades: single-edge packs run from 10 to 300, and a 100-pack of half-DE blades is 100 halves.
  • Check the seller: GEM supply is thin and counterfeit AC blades come up in forums; specialist shops name the maker and the format.

Myths and mistakes

  • AC blades are not long half-DE blades: they are thicker, longer and made for their own holders.
  • Injector blades are still made, now in China.
  • GEM blades were not discontinued: Personna’s PTFE-coated GEM is sold as AccuForge.
  • Single-edge does not mean milder: GEM razors are sensitive to blade angle, and AC razors range from mild to very aggressive.

Questions people ask

Which blades fit my shavette?

Usually half-DE blades, pre-cut or snapped from a double-edge blade. Some shavettes take AC blades instead or as well, and the razor’s maker says which. The two lengths differ and do not swap.

Are GEM and AccuForge blades the same?

Users report that AccuForge is Personna’s new name for its PTFE-coated GEM blade, the same blade under new branding. Older GEM-branded stock still circulates.

How long do single-edge blades last?

Enthusiast tallies claim 8–25 shaves depending on format: injector 8–20, AC 14–24, GEM 10–25. They are self-reported counts, not test results, and vary with beard and technique.

Can I use a snapped double-edge blade in a shavette?

Yes, in shavettes built for half-DE blades; pre-cut halves such as Derby Professional or Shark save the snapping. Razors made only for AC blades do not take them.

Where do Artist Club blades come from?

Japan, the home of the format: Feather and Kai make most of them, and Japanese storefronts often sell them for less. Schick Proline is the other common name.
